The San Patricio County Economic Development Corporation held an Industry Traffic Safety Configuration meeting today, Monday May 26, 2016. Charles Benavidez from TxDoT Sinton Area Office presented recent updates to Highways 361 and 181 and shed light on what we can expect to see in the upcoming months. The renovations to Highway 361 included a right in, right out reconfiguration and traffic count technology implementation. Traffic counts reported to have 1800-2000 cars utilizing the highway for direct connect during busy hours of the evening. The right in, right out reconfiguration of the highway has allowed the number of vehicles onto the direct connect to double from its original numbers before the reconfiguration. The resurfacing of Highway 181 added 2 inches of pavement to allow the highway to withstand the greater influx of traffic for a longer period of time. New lights to be added to Highway 361 were discussed but are still in planning stages due to Railroad pre-emption which could take 6-18 months. TxDoT plans to have smart lights that will synchronize with the trains as well as other lights in the area to help the flow of traffic. Ramp reversal projects are up in the air for TxDoT as they need permission from Port of Corpus Christi for Kay Bailey exit which could start construction in June of 2017.The proposed State Highway 200 was brought up as well. The new highway will tie FM1069 to Highway 361 at Ingleside. Naismith Engineering is partnering with TxDot for the production of the highway. Currently the planning stage is eighty percent done with an estimated construction date in late 2017 or early 2018. Our Industry Traffic Safey Configuration meetings will happen quarterly. Stay connected to our calendar for the next one.
